ECU-Remap or Chip Tuning - Which is better? What are the risks?
There is some confusion about the difference between the terms ECU-remap and chip tuning, which is why we will clarify this here for the benefit of our customers. Modern electronic tuning procedures are known as remap, chip tuning, eco-tuning, power tuning, etc. The main goal in each of these cases is to change the parameters of the vehicle's engine management system, optimizing the data in the software for controlling injection, ignition, turbocharging, injection phases, overload and overheating protections, etc., to influence the way we want the engine to work.

Unfortunately, the problem is not limited to the territory of Bulgaria. More and more often, cars are found that are REMAPped abroad, before being imported into Bulgaria. When "downloading" and analyzing the programs, the results are very disturbing. Many indicators have been changed, without understanding exactly what function they have, and exactly how much they should be changed. Many important indicators have not been changed.

The engine control software is stored in an electronic engine control unit (ECU or ECM). Before being reprogrammed, the tuner must first inform itself and identify the engine version and the software version stored in it, or make a copy of the software by directly reading the file. There are different methods for accessing the software and the method used will depend on the technology used and the tuning tools available. With older electronic units, the only method that can be used is direct access to the memory where the software is stored - inside the engine control unit (ECU). To access the memory, it is necessary to use a soldering iron/soldering station and a reader device, better known as a memory programmer.

As you can see from the explanations above, the only difference between ECU-remap and chip-tuning is the method used to read and write the engine control software. In addition to these most common methods - ECU-remap via OBD, BENCH - reading and writing through the pins of the ECU without opening it and violating its integrity. Chip tuning (direct memory manipulation) used for tuning, there are other methods that require opening the engine block when the first two methods are not possible:
BDM programming:
- Modern control units have a port called BDM, located on the board inside the ECU. Since there are ECUs that cannot be read or written safely with all the information in the software via OBD, BDM programming is the only safe way.
Boot mode:
The latest generation control units and those with Antituning protection (TP), such as the EDC17/MED17 and the older gasoline ME7/ME9 from BOSCH, use this safe method similar to BDM, and some of them have a Boot pin on the ECU connector, which allows this mode to be used via OBD.
BENCH Mode:
Bench Mode is reading and writing through the pins of the Ecu without opening it and violating its integrity.
