We all know that antifreeze is a liquid that protects our engine from overheating in the summer and from freezing in the winter. But we often forget about another important property of it – to lubricate the moving parts with which it comes into contact.
Without lubrication, elements such as a water pump, greatly reduce their resource – especially in electrical ones. The most common causes of a problem with the cylinder head gasket are not changing the antifreeze and using the wrong antifreeze in the car.
With modern platforms, there is very often a complaint of a small loss of antifreeze that cannot be detected. Then, special tools come to the rescue, which inflate and test the cooling system in the cold, when the antifreeze cannot be evaporated. This is how we detect even the smallest antifreeze leaks!
The other huge problem is bleeding. Nowadays, we can see systems with 3-4 antifreeze circulation pumps, 2 types of antifreeze, 2-4 thermostats – and all this in one car. Using the standard method of changing antifreeze, servicing such a system is literally impossible. That is why we use vacuum filling of the system and a diagnostic tester. A vacuum tool is attached to the expansion tank of the system, which draws all the air from the system and through which the new antifreeze is introduced. Meanwhile, a bleeding system is started using the diagnostic tester, which includes various combinations of opening individual thermostats and forced circulation of antifreeze. This is how the cooling system is serviced.
